Feeding for life

We're committed to helping you give your baby the best possible nutritional start with a balanced diet they'll love as they grow and develop.

We understand that one of the most essential things in the first three years of life is the food we put into our bodies. It's important for the healthy growth of your baby's rapidly developing brain and body. And, by giving your baby a nutritionally balanced diet, you're also helping establish life long foundations for healthy eating habits.

Breast is Best

Breastfeeding is best for babies and provides many benefits. It is important that, in preparation for and during breastfeeding, you eat a healthy, balanced diet. It is recommended that all formula milks be used on the advice of a health care professional responsible for maternal and child care, and based on your baby’s individual needs.

As part of Nutricia’s support of breast feeding and breast feeding mothers, clubNUTRICIA was launched early in 2009. This service provides parents and carers with considerable information and support on a wide range of topics.

Company History

Karitane began in 1907 in New Zealand where it was founded by Sir Truby King, a well respected doctor who was concerned with the high infant mortality rate. His motto was "Breast fed is best fed", however this was a time when there was no formula available for mothers who were unable to feed their infants, hence the high mortality rate. Dr. King was convinced that at least half the infant deaths occurring in the first year of life were preventable. He then began opening clinics and experimented with milk formula with extraordinary success.

Dr. King founded the Royal Society for the Health of Women and Children in 1907 in Dunedin, a time when he owned a house at Karitane where he and his wife provided care for thirteen malnourished, ailing babies.

Dr. King believed if general knowledge of the simple essentials of good feeding and health were taught widely throughout the country, then the life of one baby could be saved each day and the health of 25,000 subsequent babies could also be improved. He subsequently put his ideas about infant feeding into practice when breastfeeding was not possible. He employed a trained nurse and taught her his methods.

The Mothercraft Training Society was founded by Dr King who was invited to go to London in 1918, by a small committee formed by Lord and Lady Plunket. They had seen the amazing results achieved in New Zealand by his system of infant feeding and care, and under his supervision a Hospital and School for Nurses was established. The Plunket philosophy and the training of registered nurses began.

In 1923 the Australian Mothercraft Society was established in Sydney by a number of parents and their friends whose babies had benefitted by the work done by the Truby King Societies in New Zealand and England.

In 1927, under Dr. King’s guidance, the Karitane Products Society developed a range of milks to “Help the mothers and save the babies”.

This centre became known as a Mothercraft Hospital. Subsequently, a number of these Mothercraft Hospitals were set up in the larger cities and provinces of New Zealand.

In 1986 this range was licenced to Douglas Pharmaceuticals for distribution in New Zealand, Australia and Asia.

In 1996 Nutricia acquired the products from Douglas Pharmaceuticals.

Social Responsibility

Corporate responsibility has been in Groupe Danone’s genes for some time. Groupe Danone has a program to guide the implementation of social and environment policies in Danone businesses worldwide. Each subsidiary assesses its own performance against over one hundred criteria covering key areas such as food safety, human resource policies, the environment and relationships with suppliers and customers. This results in the creation of action plans which take into account the socio-economic environments in which they operate.

As Antoine Riboud, the founder of Groupe Danone, said in 1972: “Corporate responsibility does not end at the factory gate or at office doors. The jobs a business creates are central to the lives of employees, and the energy and raw materials we consume change the shape of our planet. Public opinion is there to remind us of our responsibility in the industrial world of today”. The Danone model relies on the principle that economic performance and attention to people goes hand in hand.

Supporting Life

In 2004, following the Tsunami which caused massive destruction, loss of lives and sharp rise in the number of orphans and homeless, “Supporting Life” was established to assist children, communities, and societies globally. The objective is to help restore normalcy to the large number of affected people and communities through donation in line with the Nutricia and Groupe Danone corporate core values.

We strive to assist the underprivileged children who are the weakest and most vulnerable in society. We have collaborated and had an agreement with the SOS Children’s Villages, which is an international social aid organisation working to provide permanent, stable homes for orphaned and abandoned children in a family-like structure.

At Nutricia Australia and New Zealand we have focused our efforts on SOS Children’s Village Ben Tre which is about 50 miles south of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The SOS Children's Village has twelve family houses, a nursery school and a school for 1000 primary and secondary level pupils. Our goal is to make a donation that gives the kindergarten and school the financial support they require to continue with the care and resources needed to operate.
